Metallica is the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on August 12th, 1991 by Elektra, commonly referred to as The Black Album because of its packaging.
The album marked a change in the band’s music from the thrash metal style of their previous four albums to a slower, heavier, and more refined sound. This album made metal universal, but also created a gap between older and newest fans.
It became the band’s best-selling album, certified 16× platinum by the RIAA in 2012, and has sold over 16,000,000 copies in the United States.
